Probe Kits and Privileges

For this task that was presented to us in class, I decided to go ahead with what I found online in terms of other examples of probe kits. Our main goal was to exchange these kits with a group member and come to a conclusion about the extent to which design and privilege are intertwined. These are the precedents I referred to.

From these two images I’ve decided to go ahead with planning where I thought of the questions, I would put into my cards and how I could make them interactive. Still quite lost on how to relate it to design and privilege, I decided to go with questions like;

Gender

Disability

Class

Religion

Country of Origin

Sexuality

But the main question was ‘do you think of yourself as privileged? How do your privileges, or lack of privilege impact your student experience?”

I also decided to make my probe kit have a checklist, a pen, sanitizer, the questions bundled, and a ‘things you will need to do this kit’ list.

After exchanging it with a fellow group member and filling theirs out and getting responses from my probe kit back. It was quite interesting to see the outcome of it all. Especially when discussing with other members of the group about their experiences with the kits they got.

I think we could all agree that if we got another chance to do it or more time, it would probably be more effective than the ones we made, mostly because it was our first time but we all enjoyed the process of making it and filling it out. I personally think the outcome of this probe kit to analyze or derive to a conclusion in regards to design and privilege would be more effective over a longer period of time along with learning more about this particular research method.
